Event Details

Join the Educational Programs Committee of the Yale Alumni Association of Metropolitan New York (YAAMNY) for a discussion and reception with Zeke Vanderhoek, Class of 1998, founder and principal of The Equity Project Charter School.

The Equity Project (TEP) is a charter school that opened in September 2009 located in Washington Heights, New York City. One of TEP's defining features is its teacher compensation-- TEP teachers are paid a salary of $125,000 and can earn a significant annual bonus based on school-wide performance. TEP's investment in teacher compensation is funded by a reallocation of existing public funds without private fundraising.

Mr. Vanderhoek began his educational career as a 6th and 8th grade teacher at I.S. 90, a public middle school in Washington Heights. He has a B.A. from Yale University and a Masters in Philosophy & Education from Teachers College at Columbia University. He was the founder  of Manhattan GMAT, a national GMAT test-preparation company.

The discussion will be moderated by urban sociologist Dr. Pedro Noguera, professor in the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development at New York University. Dr. Noguera is also the Executive Director of the Metropolitan Center for Urban Education and the co-Director of the Institute for the study of Globalization and Education in Metropolitan Settings (IGEMS).

This will surely be a lively event on school reform that you do not want to miss. This event is open to the general public.
